Biography

James Wilson is identified with Herbert Kaufman as taken by a policeman to the outskirts of Terre Haute and beaten during anti-labor terror in 1936. The June 1 dispatch places the episode on an unspecified Saturday night and reports their account presented to a Sunday workers’ meeting. It associates the terror with local police, the Chamber of Commerce and the Law and Order League. This is reported extrajudicial detention, not a conviction or measured jail term. Existing James Wilson is a Philadelphia anti-Nazi picket; no evidence identifies the two. A later account names Kaufman’s companion as Sol Larks, an unresolved reporting discrepancy.
