Biography

James Oliver was a Harlan-area coal miner indicted for murder in the frame-ups that followed the 5 May 1931 Battle of Evarts and the Kentucky coal war, held awaiting trial in the Clark County Jail.

James Oliver’s prison letter dated Winchester, Kentucky, December 8, 1931 confirms actual confinement there on that day. He describes loneliness and the jail food, and says he does not expect trial until the April court. The projected April trial is not recorded as an event or release date.
