Biography
James A. Chance was a Coharie father who joined relatives in challenging the segregated school system in Dunn, North Carolina. After the families attempted to enroll their children at the all-white Dunn High School in August 1960, James and Eugene Chance were charged with trespassing. Their federal desegregation suit helped secure admission for the high-school students in 1961. The reviewed records establish the charge but do not establish a jail booking or custodial sentence for James Chance.
The September 12, 1960 National Guardian individually reported that James A. Chance was arrested for trespassing when he tried to register his children at the segregated school in Dunn, North Carolina. Its account also mentioned four other adults and seven children taken into custody, but supplied no original booking date, completed jail term or discharge date.
