Biography

Israel Zimmerman was an Independent Shoe Workers Union representative arrested after advising Dan Palter factory workers at 151 West 26th Street not to answer a Department of Labor immigration questionnaire. The August 26, 1929 Daily Worker dates the incident to Saturday, August 24. It alleges Captain Brady threatened him and removed him from the office before the arrest outside. The initial disorderly-conduct accusation was changed at the 20th Street police station to interfering with an officer registering aliens. Magistrate Earl Smith postponed the Jefferson Market proceeding; Jacques Buitenkant represented the union and ILD. These were successive accusations in one episode, not separate arrests. Release and completed detention are unknown.
