Biography

Isaiah Hawkins was an Attica prisoner and member of its prisoner liaison committee, working to improve conditions for fellow inmates. His political poem about the September 13 suppression appears in the prisoner workshop collection Betcha Ain’t and is reproduced in Project NIA’s 2011 primer. The biography says he was released soon after the workshop began; the workshop series began May 24, 1972. This establishes actual later release but not an exact day. This profile concerns organizing and expression during imprisonment; the original charge and whether it was politically motivated are not established.
