Biography

Isaac Thomas was one of two Black men lynched near Clarksdale, Mississippi on June 9, 1934. The June 20 Daily Worker caption identifies Isaac Thomas and Joe Love and states that Sheriff Haynes handed them over to a mob of 150. It reports an accusation of attempted assault on a planter’s wife; the accusation is not treated as an established offense. Their explicit sheriff custody and transfer to the lynch mob establish custodial racial violence. The photograph shows two bodies without individual visual identification and is not assigned as either man’s portrait.
