Biography

Inez B. Crandall was the widow of Louisville and Nashville Railroad fireman Joseph T. Crandall, killed in a locomotive explosion. A Chicago Tribune dispatch dated March 18 and reproduced in the March 26, 1931 Daily Worker reports that Evansville probate judge Travis B. Williams ordered her immediately jailed for contempt. Her alleged contempt was pursuing a $95,000 railroad-death damages suit in St. Louis despite the probate court injunction issued the preceding September. The penalty was three months in the womens prison and a $500 fine plus costs. The judge offered to suspend the term if she abandoned the lawsuit; the report does not establish that she accepted or was released. The Daily Worker presents the case as punishment for asserting a railroad worker familys compensation rights.
