Biography

Ignacio Perez was a San Antonio Chicano student-movement leader and supporter of the Raza Unida Party. Federal authorities arrested him on July 23, 1976, on an accusation of shielding an undocumented immigrant from detection after a raid at Mario Cantu's restaurant. He remained in jail on July 26 because a judge required $25,000 cash bail. Chicano organizers protested the arrests as intimidation of people helping immigrant workers. Perez later testified in Cantu's trial after receiving immunity; the appellate decision identifies him as an unindicted co-conspirator. His final release date has not been established.

The conference report specifically says Ignacio Perez was free on bond and awaiting trial without a scheduled date in the immigrant-shielding prosecution. This establishes actual bail release by publication, while supplying no exact physical discharge day or complete detention total. It is not treated as dismissal of his case.
