Biography

Ida Bates led a New Orleans Unemployment Council local that the Daily Worker said had won relief for two hundred families. An October 16 dispatch published October 17, 1934, page 3, reports that she was beaten and jailed in an effort to break the Council local and that her hearing at the First Recorders Court, Tulane-Saratoga, was scheduled that day. The article does not state an arrest day, statutory charge, completed hearing, sentence, release or complete actual custody duration. Police violence and political motive are attributed to this contemporary newspaper account.
