Biography
Hy Wallace was a North Dakota farmer and Communist Party leader arrested on a charge of intimidating a federal court. A February 19 Minot dispatch in the Daily Worker, February 21, 1935, page 4 says the charge arose from protest telegrams demanding freedom for seven Divide County farmers held over a 1933 farm-sale case. The report states that Hy Wallace was held under $1,000 bond and that the ILD sent protests to federal officials in Fargo. The seven underlying defendants remained held despite their indictments being quashed; that procedural action is not a release for this defendant. The source does not expand the printed name or provide an exact arrest day, institution, trial outcome or custody total.
The Daily Worker of March 2, 1935, page 5, in a Bismarck March 1 dispatch, names Wallace with farm leader Ace Heikkila as arrested over protests against the Minot federal court prosecution of farmers resisting debt sales. It adds contempt of court to the stated allegations and identifies Judge Andrew Miller as ordering arrests of protest leaders. Wallace's reported bond was $1,000. This corroborates the existing detention; it does not establish a second arrest or exact custody dates.
