Biography
Howard Kester was an organizer and editor of the Southern Tenant Farmers Union’s Sharecroppers Voice. H.L.Mitchell’s retrospective union history describes a1935 Earle,Arkansas meeting attacked by a plantation mob. Goldberger was beaten, Evelyn Smith’s camera film documenting the attack was destroyed, and sharecroppers were clubbed. The mob physically put Kester and Goldberger in a car and ordered them out of Arkansas never to return. This records actual extrajudicial seizure and coercive expulsion for union work, not a judicial prison sentence. No precise day, measured duration or physical discharge endpoint is supplied. Kester subsequently described the attack in Washington in discussions leading to a civil-liberties investigation.
