Biography
Henry J. Salzman, an invalid former serviceman, was named among nine unemployed demonstrators beaten and arrested after a Warren Township relief march to Centerline. The June 29, 1931 account says he was beaten unconscious and taken to hospital; demonstrators were transported under guard to Mount Clemens and prosecutors ordered release after protests. His specific hospital discharge and exact custody dates are unprinted. Daily Worker, June 29, 1931, page 3. Page 3 attributes his beating during the Warren Township relief march to Chief Theut, Dove Provost and Toothless Thornton. It says nine unemployed workers including women were beaten and jailed, while Salzman was taken unconscious to hospital. A subsequent protest secured the prosecutor’s release order for the detained workers. Salzman’s individual hospital discharge, exact dates and duration remain unknown; his feared fatal injury is not a confirmed death.
