Biography

Helen Long was a Black woman arrested in Fairfield, Alabama after police found three Communist election leaflets in her purse. The October 9, 1934 Daily Worker reports that officers beat her unconscious, held her under investigation and unsuccessfully tried to have her certified insane. A court then imposed fifty days or a fifty-dollar fine for aggravated disorderly conduct. The article establishes actual jail custody but does not establish completion of the fifty days or exact admission and release dates.
