Biography
Harry Carlisle was an English-born novelist, journalist, and lecturer held without bail on Terminal Island under the McCarran Act, one of the Los Angeles deportation detainees seized in the October 1950 raids and fighting removal for his radical politics.
Page 2’s April 28 Chicago dispatch identifies Carlisle as director of the Los Angeles Workers School and eyewitness to the Gallup shootings. It announces a May 6 defense meeting where he would describe the deaths of Ignacio Velarde and Solomon Esquibel and the mass arrests. The announced appearance is prospective; this is earlier labor-defense activity, not a new arrest or an inferred beginning of his later immigration confinement. In an August 1953 published letter, Carlisle reported that he was again held at Terminal Island. This later custody observation is distinct from his recorded 1950–1951 confinement; its endpoints are unspecified. Carlisle’s letter, p.2.
