Biography

Harriet Silverman, secretary of the NewYork AllAmerica AntiImperialist League, was named among five workers serving five-day sentences for the July3,1928 WallStreet demonstration. The July12 issue anticipates release the following day; it does not yet establish actual physical discharge. The July 3 dispatch, continued on page 2, named these participants among those arrested in the Wall Street anti-imperialist demonstration and jailed at the second precinct. The report gave collective charges of obstructing traffic, speeches to incite riot and insulting an officer, with hearings scheduled that night and International Labor Defense representation. Later case-specific reporting may differ from these initial collective charges. Daily Worker, July 4, 1928, original PDF page 2. The July 11 report said these five Wall Street demonstration defendants remained virtually incommunicado and were expected to be released Friday afternoon. Men were held at the Tombs and women at Jefferson Market Jail. It described refusal of books, newspapers and family access to Minor. The expected Friday release is prospective, not proof of release. The completed UnionSquare welcome occurred yesterday,July13,1928 after this worker’s physical release from the five-day WallStreet-protest sentence. Minor and Wolf came out of the Tombs; Grecht and Silverman came out of the Workhouse. The retrospective report confirms release rather than merely announcing it. Earlier July3 arrest and intervening bail are not silently treated as one continuous term.

The July13 issue announces this afternoon’s UnionSquare welcome for the four named workers after their five-day WallStreet-protest terms. This is release-day reporting, but does not supply an individual physical discharge time; the next issue’s account of the completed welcome provides stronger retrospective confirmation.

Case

Charges: Disorderly conduct following anti-imperialist demonstration.
Arrested: Jul 3, 1928
Sentenced: Jul 9, 1928
Incarcerated: Jul 9, 1928
Released: Jul 13, 1928
Sentence: Five-day sentence; release expected July13,1928. Actual physical discharge not established by this issue. The July 10, 1928 Daily Worker reports the previous day’s sentencing and says all eight defendants chose jail. This establishes July 9 committal for this sentence, without establishing continuous custody from the earlier demonstration.
