Biography

Glenn Michael Souther was a former U.S. Navy photographer and intelligence specialist with access to sensitive reconnaissance material. A joint Naval Investigative Service and FBI inquiry examined whether he had passed classified information to the Soviet Union. After investigators alerted him to their suspicions, Souther disappeared in May 1986 and reached the Soviet Union. Soviet authorities announced in 1988 that they had granted him asylum and citizenship under the name Mikhail Yevgenyevich Orlov. Soviet reporting after his death in June 1989 acknowledged his intelligence work.

Identified source photograph

This naval-service portrait is explicitly captioned as Glenn Michael Souther in Vladimir Antonov's June 2, 2006 newspaper article about Boris Solomatin. The original 270-by-393 JPEG is preserved without a new crop, retouching or generation. Credit: original naval-service photograph reproduced by Nezavisimaya Gazeta/NVO. Original article and named caption. The Wikimedia Commons provenance record identifies the original as a U.S. Navy photograph and cites that newspaper source; this upload uses the newspaper's original, not Commons' later border-trimmed version.

No U.S. incarceration or release is established for this exile entry; arrest, prison-admission and prison-release fields remain blank. Flight during an investigation, asylum and eventual death are not recast as imprisonment endpoints. Existing exile chronology is unchanged.
