Biography

Gil Lewis was a Trade Union Unity League organizer arrested at a mass meeting in Birmingham, Alabama on July 5, 1930. The Daily Worker of July 8 reports that the arrests of Jackson, Frank Burns and Gil Lewis accompanied a police campaign to suppress Communist and union organizing. The article does not establish individual charges, sentences or release dates.

The July 3 Birmingham dispatch reports a Capitol Court meeting arrest the previous Saturday, June 28, with accusations changed to vagrancy, $300 bail each and trial scheduled July 15. It prints Barry Jackson and Gilmer Lewis. Existing July 5 entries derive from a later dispatch and may concern a repeated arrest or inconsistent reporting; the dates are not silently merged or replaced. Daily Worker, July 4, 1930, page 3. The March 15, 1930 Daily Worker reports Mann Act accusation in Chattanooga during March 1930 unemployment-demonstration repression. It places these accusations in Chattanooga, where seven were arrested March 6. This is distinct from Lewis’s June/July 1930 Birmingham organizing arrest. The group chronology does not explicitly fix an individual arrest or physical discharge day, and no total duration is inferred.
