Biography
Gerard Liebisch was from San Juan, Puerto Rico. Gerard Liebisch was sentenced to four years in prison. He served in Atlanta Penitentiary from December 15, 1917, to May 10, 1920. Hehada wife andone child. At the time of his arrest, Liebisch's wife was in "very bad health, " and his three-and-a-half-year-old daughter was forced to "stay with strangers." Writing to a friend from prison almost two years after his arrest, Liebisch expressed worry about the child's welfare and his fear that she would not recognize her father when he went home from prison.
1920s custody review: The 1921 Senate hearing records G. Liebisch of Puerto Rico: sentenced April 17, 1918 to four years, a $500 fine and costs; commuted April 22, 1919 to two and a half years; released May 10, 1920. NARA independently identifies G. Liebisch, Atlanta inmate 8358, prosecuted at San Juan for violating espionage laws. The inherited December 15, 1917 custody-start date is not independently established as Atlanta admission by these sources. No new arrest or admission date is inferred. No identifiable photograph has been located.
