Biography

George W. Ryan was a civilian from Leesburg, Virginia, held at Fort Delaware during the American Civil War. In his diary entry for August 22, 1864, fellow prisoner Isaac W. K. Handy named Ryan among the Leesburg civilians held as hostages for civilians captured by Mosby. He was detained without a criminal trial.

Source: Isaac W. K. Handy, United States Bonds (1874), p. 517, August 22, 1864 diary entry. This is the Leesburg civilian, distinct from George Ryan, the IWW prisoner held at San Quentin in the 1920s.
