Biography
George Porter was a jailed leader of Mine-Mill Local 137 in the 1937 Thomas Furnace (Republic Steel) strike at Birmingham, Alabama.
A December 17 Birmingham dispatch in the Daily Worker of December 18, 1934, page 3, names George Porter among five defendants in a strike-related bombing prosecution with trial scheduled for January 21. This is evidence of an earlier prosecution in the same Birmingham labor context, separate from the later Thomas Furnace case.
