Biography
Frederick Leonard was a Tennessee State University student and Nashville movement activist. He survived the white-supremacist attack on the Freedom Riders in Montgomery and was arrested there during the May 1961 crisis. On May 28, police arrested him again when a Freedom Ride reached Jackson, Mississippi. The next day a judge sentenced the riders to sixty days. Leonard was confined in the Hinds County jail and at Parchman before release on bond after serving 39 days. Tennessee State expelled him for participating in the ride.
