Biography
Fred Crawford helped organize the Indianapolis Black Panther Party and served as its deputy chairman. He was jailed in 1969 on assault-and-battery charges following a dispute over a parking ticket. That month he also invoked the Fifth Amendment before a San Francisco grand jury investigating the Panthers and was cited for contempt; his lawyer secured a stay while the contempt ruling was appealed.
