Biography

Frank Tucker was a twenty-four-year-old Black man lynched in Crossett,Arkansas after a mob seized him from jail on September16,1932, according to the next day Daily Worker. The newspaper says he was accused of trying to take a ten-dollar bill from a bank and of wounding a deputy during an alleged escape attempt while being taken to jail. It reports that the mob hanged him in the business district, that Sheriff John Riley was absent until afterward, and that no lynchers were identified despite a crowd of more than a thousand. This record concerns racial mob violence against a man taken from state custody, rather than a proven ordinary-crime conviction. The underlying accusations remain allegations; arrest day, individual judicial disposition and complete detention duration are not established.
