Biography
Eugene Shafarman was one of the defendants actually arrested in Detroit on February 6, 1940, in the federal prosecution alleging conspiracy to enlist volunteers for the Spanish Loyalist forces. The official investigation printed in the Congressional Record lists 4 indictments and bail of $2,500. He posted bond that afternoon and was released; dismissal of the charges on February 16 was a later legal event, not his physical discharge date. His sworn statement identifies his birth as December 1, 1904, in New York City, his medical education at Wisconsin and Michigan, and Detroit practice since September 1936. He denied Communist Party membership. He described the agents gaining entry through a fictitious injured-patient call, questioning him without access to counsel, and his refusal to sign an abstract he considered inaccurate. The report by Henry A. Schweinhaut defended the agents, while Senator Norris and the printed defendant statements disputed their treatment; these are differing attributed accounts, not an uncontested finding about all alleged mistreatment.
