Biography

Ernst Toller was a German revolutionary dramatist and member of International Red Aid and the League Against Imperialism. The January 1930 Labor Defender editor reports that United States immigration authorities detained him at Ellis Island on his arrival and questioned him about his political views. His one-year visa permission was reduced to three months. By the report he had completed a month-long American speaking tour and visited Tom Mooney at San Quentin. No precise detention or release date, formal criminal charge, sentence or American custody duration is supplied. The article’s two-and-a-half years in a German prison concerns a separate foreign episode and is not counted as United States custody. The explicitly captioned photograph depicts Toller as a prisoner in Germany.
