Biography

Elmer Smith was an Industrial Rayon Corporation striker in Cleveland, one of two defendants fined $200. Sander Voros's June 1 report published in the Daily Worker of June 3, 1935, page 3, identifies him among nine strikers convicted of violating Judge McMahon's injunction against mass picketing, limiting pickets to two at each gate. Each received ten days in jail, and the men were released into the custody of their counsel as the United Textile Workers sought new trials. The imposed ten days is not treated as completed service. Exact arrest, conviction and release days and the motions' outcomes are unreported. This Cleveland striker is distinct from Elmer Smith, the Centralia IWW defense attorney who died in 1932.
