Biography
Elbert Totherow, brother of Fred and head of National Textile Workers Union youth work, was arrested December 11, 1929 while distributing union literature with organizer Martin. Police searched and questioned them and later released them. The December 13 Daily Worker reports the arrests as suppression of Communist and union organizing. No exact discharge day or served duration is established. Source: https://www.marxists.org/history/usa/pubs/dailyworker/1929/1929-nat/v06-n240-NAT-dec-13-1929-DW-Q.pdf#page=3
The August 2 Pittsburgh dispatch individually names this organizer among those arrested in the previous day’s antiwar demonstrations. Its continuation reports the ILD had already bailed out the arrested workers. This establishes actual arrest and later liberty by the report, without choosing August 2 as the exact personal gate-release day or assigning a one-day total.
