Biography

Edward Sanford was a Black worker arrested in New Orleans on April 2, 1935. The Daily Worker of April 17, page 3, reports that he was held incommunicado at Gretna in Jefferson Parish, accused of attacking a white woman. His wife, friends and an International Labor Defense lawyer were reportedly denied access; the article describes a campaign for his release and alleges a brutal police beating. These are contemporary defense claims, not court findings. The source gives no conviction, sentence or eventual release.
