Biography

Edward Mingo was a West Haven, Vermont farmer imprisoned for nonpayment of a $350 civil court judgment. A contemporary United Press report states that he spent exactly 600 days in jail before being allowed to take the poor-debtor’s oath and released in Rutland on January 25, 1936. It says property worth more than $20 had previously prevented him from taking the oath. His exact admission date is not established.

Sources and evidence limits

Daily Worker, January 27, 1936, original PDF page 2.

The original headline and body both print 600 days, not the native OCR’s 800. The dateline January 25 plus “today” directly supports actual release January 25, 1936. No admission date is back-calculated from the reported duration. Reported age40 does not establish a unique birth year.

Contemporary assertions are attributed. Unknown birth/death dates, other custody and final outcomes are not guessed. No race, ethnicity, ideology taxonomy or affiliation is inferred.
