Biography

Doyle Assad is identified in the prison-relief letters as arrested in the Evarts battle during the Kentucky coal strike and charged with voluntary manslaughter. His mother Ollie Daughtry’s letter describes financial hardship since he was put in prison. This establishes actual imprisonment, without a sentence length, precise intake or release date or completed duration. Labor Defender, April 1934, original PDF page 20. The May 1934 current-prisoner roster reports a one-to-two-year manslaughter sentence. The accompanying letter, signed Ollie Assad as Doyle’s mother, places him at Frankfort and describes letters about what he was being fed. April’s correspondence signs the mother’s name Ollie Daughtry; both printed forms are retained without inventing a marital history. The term is imposed punishment, not completed time served.
