Biography

Doris Chase was jailed in Sioux City, Iowa after marrying Black worker Hartwell G. Bonner on January 8, 1935. The January 15 Daily Worker describes racist newspaper agitation and officials pressuring her mother, who asked that Chase be held until the marriage could be annulled. Chase said she was over eighteen; her mother claimed seventeen. The report quotes her in her cell defending her choice of husband, while officials contemplated committing her to the Mitchellville girls' training school. The proposed commitment was not reported as carried out, and no final result or release is supplied.
