Biography
Donald Bruce Grumbles was imprisoned for civil contempt after refusing testimony in a Camden federal grand-jury investigation of antiwar and antidraft activities. Senator Edward Kennedy’s June 15, 1973 statement reports that the husband and wife were released after thirteen months when continued confinement had become punitive, one month before the grand jury was to expire. It distinguishes this confinement from their guilty pleas in a separate local draft-board-raid case. Their full names are supplied by the Third Circuit’s earlier opinion, In re Grumbles, 453 F.2d 119 (1971). The thirteen months is reported actual confinement, not a nominal sentence; exact entry and release days are not inferred.
