Biography

Dexter Howard was a Southern Tenant Farmers Union activist described as a Mississippi delegate and refugee from Arkansas. The January 1937 Socialist Call reports that Arkansas deputy sheriffs kidnapped him after he fled to Memphis, carried him back without extradition and beat him severely, causing reported permanent injury. The union was considering a federal civil action. This establishes extrajudicial detention, without a formal charge, judicial sentence, exact endpoints or complete duration.
