Biography

Desmond “Dessie” Ellis is an Irish republican and Sinn Féin politician born in Ballymun, Dublin, on September 23, 1953. U.S. authorities detained him on February 6, 1982 after he attempted to enter from Canada. He remained in U.S. custody while contesting exclusion and seeking political asylum, then was deported to Ireland in March 1983. An Irish court subsequently sentenced him to ten years for possessing explosives materials; he was released in 1990 and later served on Dublin City Council and in Dáil Éireann.
