Biography

David Weiss was a 17-year-old Young Communist League member arrested with his sister Miriam while collecting Workers International Relief contributions on a B.M.T. subway train in December 1929. The December 28 Daily Worker reports that Flatbush magistrate Sylvester Sabbatino threatened David with a beating and the family with deportation. A January 1 interview describes police taking both young people to the station and the judge returning them to jail after a Tuesday appearance; they said they were held incommunicado even from their parents and appeared again Friday. Both were United States citizens. No exact arrest day, completed sentence or physical discharge is established.
