David Sanchez, identified in contemporary reporting as Brown Beret organizer, was jailed in the 1968 prosecution of supporters of the East Los Angeles school walkouts. The arrests followed student demands for equal education and Chicano rights.
David Sanchez, identified in contemporary reporting as Brown Beret organizer, was jailed in the 1968 prosecution of supporters of the East Los Angeles school walkouts. The Berkeley Barb named him among seven arrested organizers and reported that their bail bonds were paid and they were released on June 3, 1968. The arrests followed student demands for equal education and Chicano rights. Actual pretrial confinement; released on paid bail on June 3, 1968. The report states that bail was reduced to $250 for each named prisoner except David Sanchez, whose bail was $1,000. Exact arrest/admission date and total custody duration remain unresolved because the Barb and The Movement disagree about the arrest date. No conviction or prison sentence is established by this report.
In its account of the 1968 East L.A. walkout arrests, Jennifer Correa’s thesis reports that police searched the Brown Beret headquarters during David Sanchez’s arrest and took membership lists, organizational agendas and personal materials. This adds context to his already recorded pretrial confinement; the thesis’s general bail account does not replace the contemporary evidence of his June 3 release.
