Biography

David Poindexter was a leader of unemployed workers. An August 22 Chicago dispatch in the Daily Worker, August 23, 1934, page 6 says he had just been released on bond while appealing a five-year sentence. It announced that he would speak at an International Labor Defense outing in Bristol, Wisconsin, on August 25 for the Hillsboro-Poindexter defense fund. The announcement confirms an interim bond release but supplies no precise release day, institution, charge or actual duration served.

Printed David Pointdexter, the Black unemployed leader is identified as a Communist congressional candidate then held at Joliet under a one-to-five-year sentence. The ILD was seeking bail. This supplements the already recorded case and precedes its later bond release; a one-to-five-year sentence is not a completed service total. Daily Worker, June 16, 1934, page 5. Labor Defender, July 1934: The Chicago paragraph supplies conspiracy and inciting-to-riot convictions, Judge Allegretti, Joliet confinement and an imposed one-to-five-year sentence plus $750 fine each for Poindexter and five others. Their appeal was pending. This adds the reported statutory accusations, sentencing judge and fine without converting the maximum into time actually served. The June22 Chicago dispatch identifies the Communist congressional candidate as among Vincennes Hotel anti-segregation demonstrators arrested the previous week and bailed at $1,000 each. He attended the subsequent Pythian Temple protest. The article calls six arrestees but names seven including other arrested workers; the inconsistent count is not forced into a false roster total.

The June26 Chicago report names Poindexter among twelve arrested at the EllisPark meeting Friday June24. Although court ordered the group released Saturday June25, Poindexter was fined $100 for insisting on his own account and taken back to jail by five officers. This is a separate arrest from the earlier VincennesHotel protest; no final release is established.
