Biography

David Baxter was a California sign painter and writer named in the wartime sedition indictments. A September 1944 account entered in the Congressional Record documents that he was being held in the District of Columbia jail because he could not obtain bail. The available evidence does not establish exact endpoints or a reliable total for that detention. He was named in the January 3, 1944 Washington indictment alleging conspiracy to undermine military loyalty under the Smith Act. The mass trial ended in a mistrial on December 7, 1944. The indictment was dismissed in December 1946; no conviction resulted in this case.
