Biography

Dan Pippin Jr., reported age 18, was a Black defendant in Tuscaloosa accused of killing eighteen-year-old Vaudine Maddox on May 31, 1933. The Daily Worker's August 13 dispatch published August 14, page 1, alleges denial of defense rights: Irving Schwab, Allen Taub and Frank B. Irwin of the ILD were barred from representing the boys August 1 despite family retention, denied jail access, and removed from town by National Guardsmen after the case was adjourned. The paper denounces the prosecution as a racial frame-up and alleges official complicity in the mob seizure. The report says his bullet-riddled body was found near Woodstock, Alabama, about two hours after an armed mob took three defendants from deputy sheriffs. Exact individual arrest, jail-admission and death dates are not independently established by this report. Page 5's Michael Gold column reproduces a racist poem sold by Rev. Grover C. Tucker about the Vaudine Maddox killing and the lynched men Dan Pippin and A. T. Hardin. Gold presents it as incitement and racial-terror propaganda. Its accusations are attributed to the poem, not accepted as findings of guilt or confession. This is additional context for the already documented lynching, not another arrest or death. Source: https://www.marxists.org/history/usa/pubs/dailyworker/1934/v11-n039-feb-14-1934-DW-LOC.pdf

Daily Worker, February 14, 1934; relevant page stated in the accompanying profile note.

The August 15 Tuscaloosa dispatch in the August 16, 1933 Daily Worker names Dan Pippen Jr. together with A. T. Harden as men lynched on Sunday, resolving August 13, 1933. The August 17 issue's August 16 ILD report independently repeats the Sunday lynching. The same Tuscaloosa prosecution, joint defendant cohort, mob seizure from deputies and Woodstock location identify the existing Dan Pippin Jr. profile; this is not his father, Dan Pippen Sr., reported still jailed. Earlier reports describe Saturday-night custody before the handover; the later explicit Sunday wording supplies the death day without assigning an arrest, physical admission or release day. Elmore Clark, the third defendant initially reported missing or dead, was subsequently found alive and returned to jail; he is not counted as another death. The reports give Pippin Jr.'s age as 18, but no birthday is supplied. Only the profile death day is recorded. The existing case, unknown custody endpoints and numerical totals remain unchanged; no separate death-in-custody endpoint, completed sentence or measured time served is inferred.
