Biography

Dan Lane was an Avella coal miner jailed in Washington County for $75.35 in court costs after a grand jury refused his complaint against police who had seized union records and mail and broken up a miners’ meeting. The November 12, 1928 Daily Worker places the grand-jury action on the preceding Thursday, November 8, and explicitly reports his resulting imprisonment. Lane was the complainant, not a defendant convicted of stealing the records. Court costs are not a measured jail term. The exact physical intake, discharge and complete detention are unreported.
