Biography

Dale Speers Cunningham was a former Rutgers University professor and translator of Spanish, French and Italian. FBI reports describe his arrest in Camden, New Jersey, on August 27, 1971, while agents were attempting to enter a residence to locate Camden draft-board defendant Edward J. McGowan. The FBI alleged that Cunningham assaulted agent Robert H. Waller and obstructed the investigation; these allegations do not establish guilt. He was charged under 18 U.S.C. sections 111 and 1505. U.S. Magistrate Charles L. Rudd remanded him to U.S. Marshal custody on $50,000 bail that day. On August 30 Judge Mitchell H. Cohen reduced bail to $10,000, but he remained in custody. The reviewed reports do not establish the final disposition, release date or total time served. Marshal records quoted by the FBI give May 27, 1932 as his birth date and Elmira, New York as birthplace. Source: FBI Camden/MEDBURG file NW68262 DocId32989529, pp. 172, 176–177.
