Biography

Curtis Gordon, a Black Wilmington resident, was arrested by Pennsylvania Railroad detective Leroy Hutton while collecting coal. The report says Hutton shot him while taking him to the station and that Gordon died before the December 16 hearing report; a manslaughter and assault-and-battery hearing against Hutton was continued. The report documents fatal police custody, but gives no exact arrest or death day, individual criminal conviction or measured duration. Its account of the shooting is attributed contemporary reporting. Daily Worker, December 17, 1935, original PDF page 5.
