Biography
Consuelo Lee Tapia de Corretjer was a Puerto Rican writer, pianist, educator and independence activist. A granddaughter of Alejandro Tapia y Rivera, she worked on the newspaper Pueblos Hispanos in New York with Juan Antonio Corretjer, whom she married. After returning to Puerto Rico, she organized political study groups and helped establish the Puerto Rican Socialist League. She was arrested in October 1969 on conspiracy charges and imprisoned at the women's jail in Vega Alta. She later devoted much of her work to the release of Puerto Rican political prisoners. Her books include El Alfabeto Patriótico and the poetry collection Con un hombro menos. She was born on March 29, 1904 and died on June 28, 1989.
The 2004 centennial edition of El Alfabeto Patriótico identifies her full birth name as Consuelo Isabel Lee Tapia, born in Santurce, seventh of ten children of Alberto E. Lee Basanta and Catalina Tapia Díaz. Its Casa Corretjer biography dates her marriage to Juan Antonio Corretjer to February 14, 1944 after meeting in New York in 1942, their return to Puerto Rico to 1946 and their move to Guaynabo to 1948. It credits her with helping establish Escuela Betances and a library of more than five hundred books for workers learning literacy, the origin of the alphabet. It reports their 1969 seditious-conspiracy imprisonment with other central-committee members. The Corretjer memorial biography, PDF page 5, reports that Juan Antonio Corretjer, Consuelo Lee Tapia and other Puerto Rican Socialist League members were imprisoned in June 1971 on charges presented since 1969. This is evidence of custody in June 1971, but not an exact admission day or an actual release date. It does not establish whether Consuelo’s earlier 1969 custody continued uninterrupted or whether she was jailed again, so the earlier case’s dates are not silently replaced or connected into a continuous period.
