Biography
Connie Matthews was a Danish-Jamaican activist who served as the Black Panther Party’s international coordinator beginning in 1969. She married Panther 21 defendant Michael “Cetewayo” Tabor. After Tabor and Richard Moore failed to appear for trial in February 1971, Matthews left the United States with them and joined the party’s international section in Algeria. Matthews and Tabor later moved to Zambia, and she eventually returned to Jamaica, where she died in 1993. No source located for this review shows that American authorities charged or jailed Matthews herself.
The Militant of April 2, 1971 identified her as Connie Matthews Tabor, formerly Huey Newton’s personal secretary. It reported that she accompanied Michael Cetewayo Tabor and Richard Dharuba Moore to Algiers following their February 8 failure to appear at trial, and that New York Panthers released a video of Cetewayo and Connie Tabor in Algiers on March 11.
