Biography

Colm Murphy was an Irish activist from South Armagh prosecuted in the United States after a July 1982 FBI undercover operation involving an agreement to purchase twenty M-16 rifles for the struggle against British rule in Northern Ireland. The Militant reports a July 15, 1983 sentence of five years and a $10,000 fine, later reduced to four years. He began a hunger strike at the federal prison in Milan, Michigan on September 9, 1984, seeking transfer closer to his East Coast family, and was moved to the federal prison hospital in Springfield, Missouri on September 13. These observations establish sustained actual US custody, but neither initial admission nor final discharge or completed duration. Earlier 1971–1974 and 1976–1978 Irish imprisonment is foreign context and is not added to US time served. Source: https://www.themilitant.com/1984/4835/MIL4835.pdf#page=8
