Biography

Clyde Crammer was a Black worker boarding with the Washburns. The August 10 Atlanta dispatch reports his kidnapping with the other two men on the night of July 12, 1936. Men claiming to be the law forced entry to Washburn’s home after refusing to show a warrant, seized the victims, handcuffed them and drove them roughly five miles away. The account describes forced stripping, beating with blackjacks and whips, revival with swamp water and threats to leave Georgia. It places the attack in an anti-organizing terror campaign and reports possible LaFollette committee inquiry; that inquiry was prospective. These allegations are attributed to the contemporary report. No exact end of private confinement or independently measured duration is supplied. Daily Worker, August 11, 1936, page 6.
