Biography

Claudette Johnson was an Oakland woman imprisoned at Alameda County’s Santa Rita Jail in Pleasanton, California. She gave birth to a daughter in the jail in December 1976. The Black Panther reported that she was among the women moved to the men’s jail section after a February 6, 1977 protest in support of a fellow prisoner facing solitary confinement. Johnson said officials repeatedly refused medical attention for an illness following childbirth. After her release in July 1977, she sued the county sheriff’s department over the denial of postnatal care. Her original charges, admission date and exact length of imprisonment remain unresolved.
