Biography

Clarence Adams was a U.S. Army corporal from Memphis and one of 21 American Korean War prisoners who refused repatriation. He cited racism in the United States, studied communist political theory while captive and crossed into China with the group on February 24, 1954. In China he married and later made Radio Hanoi broadcasts urging Black American soldiers to oppose the Vietnam War. He returned to the United States in 1966 as the Cultural Revolution made China increasingly hostile to foreigners. The House Un-American Activities Committee subpoenaed him but did not question him publicly.
