Biography

Cinque led the African captives’ uprising aboard the Amistad. Elizabeth Lawson’s 1936 historical retrospective recounts his capture by United States officials off Long Island in 1839, imprisonment while contesting enslavement, the abolitionist defense movement, favorable federal court rulings and the captives’ eventual return to Africa. The accompanying portrait caption identifies him as Cinque, painted by Nathaniel Jocelyn while awaiting trial in prison. This profile follows the source’s printed identity and does not merge him with Ruchell Magee, who later used Cinque as an alias. The retrospective’s approximate chronology is not used for exact admission or release dates.
