Biography

Christopher Ruff is an Arizona First Amendment auditor who publishes police encounters under the name Direct D. Beginning in 2021, he recorded and livestreamed officers conducting investigations in Mesa and other Phoenix-area cities. In October 2022, a Mesa municipal judge sentenced him to at least five days in jail in four cases arising from police-scene filming and entry into a restricted part of Mesa City Plaza. The sentence included 180 suspended days and three years of probation, with a condition barring him from approaching or recording Mesa police investigations. Ruff said he was being punished for protected speech and planned to appeal; the judge said the punishment addressed interference, escalation, and repeated violations rather than recording alone.

## Mesa filming cases Ruff began regularly recording police activity in 2021 and described the work as an effort to test First Amendment protections and hold officers accountable. Four Mesa cases reached sentencing together in October 2022. They involved encounters in which officers said he remained too close to active investigations or refused directions to move, and an incident in which he entered a restricted stairway inside Mesa City Plaza after being told not to. Municipal Judge Raymond Schumacher ordered at least five days in jail, imposed 180 suspended days, and placed Ruff on probation for three years. One probation condition prohibited him from going to areas where Mesa police were investigating or recording Mesa officers during the probation period. Ruff argued in court that filming and verbally challenging police were protected speech and said he intended to appeal. Schumacher said Ruff’s recording by itself was not the basis for punishment, but found that his conduct deliberately escalated the encounters and interfered with officer safety and investigations. ## Source - [East Valley Tribune via Police1: “Ariz. ‘guerilla journalist’ jailed for police filming, accessing restricted areas”](https://www.police1.com/legal/articles/ariz-guerilla-journalist-jailed-for-police-filming-accessing-restricted-areas-KaHT2GUQGxWWT66X/) *Profile image: video still published with the East Valley Tribune report; Facebook via Gilbert Sun News.*
